Congratulations to the 2nd graders on a wonderful "Spring Sing" concert last month! I was blown away with how beautifully they sang and am so proud of all of their hard work. In case you missed it, or in would like to listen to the songs again (as I have already done a bunch of times!), here are some of the recordings.

In Young 5's we have been doing different songs and chants about "things that go." Cars, trucks, trains and boats--we have sung them all! Here is one of our favorite chants and two videos of songs that we have enjoyed. I hope you enjoy sharing these songs with your family!
Hello Bryant/Pattengill Families! I would like to personally invite you to “An Evening of Music” with the music teachers of the Ann Arbor Schools. This Friday, May 1st at 7:30pm in the lovely Forsythe Middle School Auditorium, many music teachers in AAPS will come together and share their talents in a benefit performance to raise money for the Cooperative Outreach Music Program (COMP). COMP is an AAPS partnership of 20+ years that underwrites the cost of private music instruction to promising students of limited means. The evening’s performances will range from classical to folk, and Broadway to jazz. I have been organizing this event for the past few months and will also be singing and playing guitar with a folk trio. Suggested donations are $10 for adults and $5 for students and all proceeds will go towards COMP. We hope that you will be able to come out and support this program and enjoy an evening of excellent music! I would love to see Bryant/Pattengill families there!
Today we had our first "informance" of the week and it was a huge success! I want to thank all of the different family members that took time out of their day to come and join us in music class. We had over 18 different families represented, and our music room was packed! I really enjoyed being able to talk with you about your child's music education and give you a little crash course on how children learn music :) The students had a great time singing and dancing with you all and loved being able to share all that they have learned this year in music. In case you need it, here is the "informance" schedule for the remainder of the week. We hope to see you at your child's class!
You know those silly looking instruments we have on our classroom wall called boomwhackers? Well check out what a group of musicians in France was able to do with them. Here is a video of them playing Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude No. 1....on BOOMWHACKERS! How cool is that?! I wonder how much they had to practice to be able to do that?
This week at Bryant we celebrated "March is Reading Month" with a fun spirit week. Monday, was "read a shirt day" where students wore shirts with different sayings on them. Tuesday was "write a note to a teacher day" and I was overwhelmed with all of the kind notes I received from so many of our students. It truly brightened my day! Wednesday was "joke in your pocket" day and the students all had so much fun sharing their jokes with each other. Thursday was "Class Color Day," where each class voted on a color that they would all wear. During our Harambee that day, we got a chance to chant some ostinatos to go along with our colors and it was a ton of fun. Today is "dress up like a book character" day and it has been so fun seeing all of their cute costumes. To go along with my costume today, "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!" all of the classes read the book and gave it a musical twist. In some classes we even added drums to the song and tested our rhythm reading skills! Overall, it has been a great week and even though we are almost to the end of March, I hope we continue to encourage our students to read, read read!!!
Here are some photo highlights from our week in music class! 1st graders demonstrate triple meter by rolling balls on the macrobeats to "It Rained A Mist."
Today I was totally impressed by the 1st graders in Mr. Brine's class and just had to share! We were singing an old English song called "The North Wind." We have sung it in class before and are working on it for our concert at the end of May. In previous class periods the students figured out on their own that the song was in triple meter and learned the melody to the song. Today, however, I thought I would give them a challenge. While they were singing the melody, I sang the harmony along with them. They were so interested in the harmony part that I was singing that I decided to teach it to them and see if we could switch parts. Here are the beautiful results :) I am constantly blown away with the growth that I see in all of our students at Bryant and at how eager they are to learn. It really is a joy to watch them learn. Is anyone in your family a Frozen fanatic?! Well check out this awesome behind-the-scenes video of the musicians creating the soundtrack. Watch how the musicians and producers match the music to each scene. Why do you think they are wearing headphones while they are playing? |
