This week at Bryant we celebrated "March is Reading Month" with a fun spirit week. Monday, was "read a shirt day" where students wore shirts with different sayings on them. Tuesday was "write a note to a teacher day" and I was overwhelmed with all of the kind notes I received from so many of our students. It truly brightened my day! Wednesday was "joke in your pocket" day and the students all had so much fun sharing their jokes with each other. Thursday was "Class Color Day," where each class voted on a color that they would all wear. During our Harambee that day, we got a chance to chant some ostinatos to go along with our colors and it was a ton of fun. Today is "dress up like a book character" day and it has been so fun seeing all of their cute costumes. To go along with my costume today, "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!" all of the classes read the book and gave it a musical twist. In some classes we even added drums to the song and tested our rhythm reading skills! Overall, it has been a great week and even though we are almost to the end of March, I hope we continue to encourage our students to read, read read!!!
Here are some photo highlights from our week in music class! 1st graders demonstrate triple meter by rolling balls on the macrobeats to "It Rained A Mist."
Today I was totally impressed by the 1st graders in Mr. Brine's class and just had to share! We were singing an old English song called "The North Wind." We have sung it in class before and are working on it for our concert at the end of May. In previous class periods the students figured out on their own that the song was in triple meter and learned the melody to the song. Today, however, I thought I would give them a challenge. While they were singing the melody, I sang the harmony along with them. They were so interested in the harmony part that I was singing that I decided to teach it to them and see if we could switch parts. Here are the beautiful results :) I am constantly blown away with the growth that I see in all of our students at Bryant and at how eager they are to learn. It really is a joy to watch them learn. |
