Hello 1st Grade Families! This is just a reminder that next week we will be having our 1st grade Informances and we would love for you to join us if you are able! Here is a preview of the activities we will be sharing with you! (And if you are not able to join us, ask your 1st grader to share them with you at home. I'm sure they would love another opportunity to perform for you! :) )

This week in music we have been getting ready for all of the tasty treats at the Ice Cream Social this Friday by singing some fun songs! With "Hippity Hop," we had fun skipping around the music room and singing about our favorite candies. We also figured out that this song is in TRIPLE METER and were able to read some rhythms as well! We also had fun IMPROVISING about what our dream ice cream sundae would be by singing our answers, toppings and all! I hope to see you all at the Ice Cream Social this Friday! (And maybe you'll be the one to win some snacks and time in the music room with me and baby Libby from the silent auction! :) ) Hello, 1st graders! It has been so fun learning to read music with you the past couple of weeks! Can you read these duple meter RHYTHM patterns to someone at home? What about the TONAL patterns for "I Don't Care if the Rain Comes Down?" Have fun! Here are some of the fun frog songs that the Kindergarteners and Young 5's have been enjoying this week!
This morning we had our annual assembly to celebrate the life and dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I was delighted to see so many parents and family members who came out to celebrate with us and was so proud of all of the classes that participated. Here are just a few recordings of some of the different class presentations. Enjoy!
In 1st grade humanities we have been talking about living things and have been making connections to Camille Saint-Saen's "Carnival of the Animals." While originally composer Saint-Saens wrote a piece of music to represent different animals as a joke for one of his composer friends, the "Carnival of the Animals" has become beloved to many. So far, we have listened and moved to "Aquarium" and pretended to be fish swimming in the water. Today, we listened to a different animal, and the 1st graders in Mrs. Lim's class were challenged to listen to it and decide what animal they thought it sounded like. They had to write the animal name on their board and could draw a picture if they wanted, but the most important part was that they wrote WHY they thought it sounded like that animal. Here is picture of their responses! The had great ideas as to what animal they thought it was, but more importantly, they were able to use their critical ears and back up their answers with what they were hearing in the music. In the end, we figured out that it was the elephant because the music sounded like a heavy elephant, slowly stomping around. Click on the video below to listen to "Elephant."
Here are the 2nd grade classes' "Pumpkin Patch" compositions. Each class decided what tonality they wanted their song to be in and together, they decided on the melody for each line of the chant. This week we had fun listening to each classes composition and comparing the shapes of the different melodies.

This week in 2nd grade music humanities, we continued our discussion about the importance of community and the many different ways that we can be active members of the different communities in which we live. One of our projects during this unit was to make a music video of our Bryant School Song to share with family and friends at Curriculum Night, as well as on our school webpage. Our Bryant School song is something that unites our school community and brings us all together, and we had so much fun making this video for you! The 2nd graders helped to brainstorm different ideas for the video and were even a part of the editing process! We hope you enjoy our Bryant school music video as much as we do! We love Bryant School! ROAR!
Welcome back, families! I hope you all had a nice, relaxing summer and are excited for all that this school year has in store! We had a great first week in music class and I really enjoyed getting to welcome back so many familiar faces in 1st and 2nd grade. I kept telling the students that the summer just felt like one long weekend because even though it was our first week back, were able to pick up right where we left off. The 1st and 2nd graders entered the music room like pros, and were ready to learn and make music from the moment we began. I can't wait to see how they continue to build upon their knowledge from last year as they learn and grow through music. I was also overjoyed to introduce our new kindergartners and young 5's classes to the music room. We had a lot of fun learning and I can't wait to get to know them better over the course of the school year! Here are some of the highlights of our week for each grade...
