This week, in honor of Valentine's day next week, our classes have been doing different activities with the simple song, "Love Somebody." Kindergartners enjoyed singing the song and then taking turns playing the tonic pattern on my metallophones (xylophones with metal bars). The first and second graders were musical detectives and worked to find the hidden major tonic patterns in my song, and figured out that there are 3. Then they got a chance to play those patterns on glockenspiels, and even got to improvise their own major tonic patterns. 2nd graders have been working on reading the notation for those patterns as well. Lastly, we used what we learned about major tonic patterns and applied them in a game that Ms. Vaujin, my student teacher, taught called "Lucy Locket" where students got to pass a key around the circle and then the student in the middle got a chance to guess who had the key by singing their own major tonic pattern. If the person had the key, they sang the same pattern back, but if the person did not have the key, they sang a different major tonic pattern. This is just one example of how one song can be adapted for different grade levels, adding more challenging concepts as the students learn and grow. Here is a recording of Ms. Wittmann's Kindergarten class singing this song. And the secret is out---the students here at Bryant love YOU!
