This week in 1st grade music, we learned a song and game called "Hello Mr. Bones." In this activity, we talked about how the song is in MINOR tonality and how in minor tonality, our resting tone is called "la." We then talked about how it is also in DUPLE meter, which means that our microbeat is divided into two parts called "Du De." I then challenged the 1st graders to switch between keeping the big microbeat (DU) and the little microbeat (DU DE) by holding up a sign that either said MACRO or micro. Here is a recording of Mrs. Bass's 1st grade class playing this game. Then we got to play a movement game where we picked one student to go to the center of the circle to be Mr. or Mrs. Bones. That student then got to point to the other students around the circle on the beat and whoever they landed on got to make their own "skeleton pose" that the rest of the class got to copy. We had so much fun learning this song and playing these games, and learned so much about music in the process! I hope you enjoy "Hello Mr. Bones!"
